Peer adviser The end of sophomore year was the beginning on my leadership transformation. I finally put myself out there and took all of my learned skills to practice. I applied for various positions, including the peer adviser position at Undergraduate Academic Advising. Applying for the job, I had no idea the scope of the position or the growth that the job would provide me with. I remember being a participant at the group interview, worried that I was not doing enough to make myself stand out. I was quiet, uncomfortable and nervous. After being unnoticed for the two-hour process, I was sure that I was no longer going to be considered for the position. Then a few days later, I had my individual interview. I had never felt so great after an interview. Learning more about the position through their questions and hearing all of my responses come some naturally.
It has been an incredible honor and privilege to be able to work so closely with so many students. Comparing this position to my past experience as a resident adviser, academic advising provides a space where individuals can help and guidance in a safe, non judgmental space. In this role, I have furthered my belief that everyone has a story, and that stories have the potential to invoke change when shared. College was such a transformational and time of growth for me, it's so rewarding to help others shape their own experiences in a way that will provide similar opportunities for learning and expansion. Stepping into the role of Senior Peer, I along with another senior peer were responsible for leading our team of advisers, planning training, creating schedules and serving as a liaison between the peers and professional staff. This role has allowed me to gain professional leadership skills, and has allowed me to develop skills of managing teams and listening to the needs of others. |
